I was wondering what that was. Optical, as in fiberoptical?

Can I connect a regular 1/8 inch mic jack into it, or do I need a convertor?

Also, what suggestings do you have for a digital audio recorder, that will let me record a lot of high quality audio onto it?

Optical as in fibreoptic, yes. It's a digital signal so you can't just plug it into any old jack without first having it converted back to analogue.

The alternative to optical digital is co-axial digital which works just as well (it's a digital signal after all). This uses phono type connectors or sometimes jack connectors but work only with a digital signal.
